Previously our first projects in class are pinch pots. Pinching is one of the foundation techniques used in all Ceramic classes, not just the 70's elementary school ashtrays that many of us made. My own decision to use ocarinas as the first project came about rather indirectly. I made a series of pieces (of my own work) that were small and roundish and had holes in them and I kept having people ask me if they were ocarinas, which prompted me to find out what an ocarina was. This was several years ago, and then last year Ceramic Arts Daily, which is produced by the Potter's Council out of Columbus OH, published an article on how to make an
ocarina fairly easily, using two pinch pots that are sealed together. I used this last summer for the Advantage Knights Summer Enrichment Camp, where middle school kids get to come and experience fun summer, school related projects. We made ocarinas and it went well enough that I thought it would be a fun alternate to the pinch pots, and hopefully we would get something that they still wanted to take home at the end of the semester.
